We had the honor of interviewing Debadrita Sarkar, the author of three poems featured in Issue 2 of Eterna Journal. In this interview, she shares insight into her creative journey, her poetic voice, and her self-published poetry collection, A Poetic Heart.

Debadrita is a bilingual writer, bilingual poet, author, blogger, compiler, Editor of Bharat Patriotism Magazine, and Record Holder based in India. She is also interested in translating and has currently opened a platform "Abhiyanam" to run campaigns for the environment, spreading advocacy for the specially abled persons and self Compassion projects.

Hi Debadrita. What are some of your fun facts? Why do you write?

Well, the fun fact about me is that, I am very childish in nature, though a teenager and mother nature is my first inspiration in writing. I write to get my inner voice and inner strength out to the world, from the every corners of my heart.

Besides writing, what other things do you like to do?

I like to translate, illustrate children's books ( Though I am not much good at it), thinking and reading others works.

In “An Auspicious Art” (featured in Issue 2 of Eterna Journal), in which you contemplated and elevated the beauty of a vivid twilight. Do you often draw inspiration from nature? What other things often inspire you when you write?

Yes! Well, mother nature is the first inspiration of mine when I started writing. I was twelve when, accidently, I wrote a poem after seeing two birds flying and playing around my roof. Suddenly, it strikes out a poem in my brain and that turned me a poet, since then.. Morality of human life, spirituality, self compassion, social and economical culture of the world, history are my more themes, on which I usually write about.

Tell us about your new poetry collection, “A Poetic Heart." Also, what are the main emotions and ideas you want your readers to take away?

You can get a idea about my poetry collection from the synopsis of my book.
The "A Poetic Heart : Poems On Self Compassion" is mainly written by drawing the inspiration of the true life events of my own life, " from darkness to light". The three parts of the book - " Self healing", " Resurrection" and " Embracing Life", containing ten poems each, contradict and compose a thematic expression, symbolising the pains of ones who want to heal themselves and finally after going through the obstacles and self acceptance, they recover and start to embrace the life in their own way. The book also advocates for self compassion for everyone who want to heal.

Could you share a bit about a particular poem from the collection? What was the inspiration?  What's its message?

One of my reviewers "Suman Mondal" said that he liked the poem "Sacra" in my collection and he resonated with it. My favourite poem in the collection is " Voyage" of the Resurrection chapter of my poetry collection.

Some of the lines,

"shivering for cold

crying for whatever I had lost,

lost memories of the outer world and all.

Is dying the only purpose of life?

Never!

But we all have to die one day,

leaving the earth for another universe!

the destiny !

But, we don't live to die but for a purpose!

A purpose !

Or an another purpose!

Oh! My soul

An another purpose for your existence!

An another purpose

for your thrilling heart!

Enchanting hymns to God,

For a way of recovery.."

The message of the poem is simply that don't escape, even if you miss an opportunity or find no purpose of your life, live it and one day, you will find more opportunities and an another purpose for your life again.

How has your life experiences or imagination influenced the process of writing and production of “A Poetic Heart”?

These elements and themes totally influenced my work and I have transformed my scars to poems in this collection. I have used many metaphors like for rough life used " Brumal land", used " Scars " for life pain and for unsaid words " Buried heart " !!

What challenges (if any) did you face while compiling this collection?

Yes. I have faced some challenges while writing the book. Actually, I had written this book before my boards exams and so, my parents were against it. Still, I wrote this book because my heart wants it. Another problem was that, I have written it mobile phone, so sometimes I felt that a desktop might be very fit for it but alas ! I don't have it.

What was the most fulfilling part about writing your own collection?

The most fulfilling part about writing the collection is when I learned new words while writing the collection. Well, some were Latin words !

Is there a favorite line you would like to share from one of the poems in “A Poetic Heart”?

"Oh! My soul An another purpose for your existence! "

What are some of your goals for the future?

I want to get traditionally publish now.

Why did you choose to self-publish a poetry collection? What advice would you give to emerging poets and writers who want to get published?

I chose to self publish it under The Writers Pocket Publisher as I think that Imagination and creativity has no limitations and there should be no editorial eye through it.

Some advices for young writers “Always listen to your heart and don't get anyone over it" and " never give up."

Thank you to Debadrita Sarkar for sharing her story, her poetry, and the inspiration behind “A Poetic Heart.” We hope this interview gives readers a deeper look into her creative journey and her passion for poetry
